SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A boil water advisory has been issued after officials with the Woodruff Roebuck Water District said a water main break in Spartanburg led to outages and could cause some delays for drivers in the area.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) asks that all customers in the Woodruff Roebuck Water District boil their water for at least one minute before drinking or cooking until further notice.

The break happened on U.S. 221 at Southport Rd. (SC 295), according to Woodruff Roebuck Water District General Manager Curt Dillard.

Dillard said several customers did lose service Thursday morning after the 20-inch water main broke. Dillard said that by noon, workers had the break isolated and only a few dozen people within the area between U.S. 221, Southport Road and Airport Road were without water.

Dillard said it would take several hours to restore the line and restore service to those customers .

Dillard said crews have not confirmed any contamination to the water supply, but said the lack of water pressure due to the water main break created the potential for contamination.

Dillard said crews would be taking bacteria samples from various locations in the water district and would advise customers when the boil water notice was no longer needed.

Dillard said the single-lane exit ramp from U.S. 221 onto Southport Road would be closed for much of the day, Thursday.

Drivers should expect delays in the area.
