Roofers have not had to look far to find work this winter.

Still, the Connecticut Roof Repair company from Stafford Springs found the time to volunteer.

"Now we're getting slammed," said Jerry St. Cyr of Connecticut Roof Repair. "Especially with the rain yesterday, a lot of calls."

Even so, St. Cyr and his company donated time Thursday to shoveling off the Willington home of retired couple Mickey and John Bellman.

He said the company has been in high demand over fears of ice dams and even worse, roof collapses.

"Just to help these people out, they're good people," said St. Cyr. "Help out neighbors, family, friends take care of that before we go out and make money."

The Bellmans said they've lived in their home for 50 years. Their neighbor is one of St. Cyr's employees.

"Usually when it gets this heavy, my son-in-law's grandson rakes it off," explained Mickey Bellman. "But we're happy Jesse and his crew asked if they could clean it and we said yes."

St. Cyr said if folks try to clean their own roofs, make sure a plastic shovel is used. Shingles could be damaged otherwise.

He also said that if homeowners hire someone, they should make sure they have insurance. He said if the workers don't know what they are doing, they could end up doing more harm than good.

"People just hire whomever to shovel the roofs," St. Cyr said. "They chop it and it starts leaking and you really have problems. After this we're going to West Hartford to fix a problem with a gutter, because someone went in with a hatchet and now their whole wall is leaking."

After this winter, St. Cyr said that is the last thing homeowners want.
