The Ukrainian community in Tucson held an evening prayer vigil Thursday to remember those who were killed in Ukraine's political demonstrations.

Pastor Andriy Chirovsky led the small and solemn vigil at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church on Vanover Road, the only Ukrainian-based Christian church in Tucson.

Nearly 20 people, some dressed in traditional embroidered Ukrainian blouses, attended the hour-long vigil to light candles and pray for peace in Ukraine.

Chirovsky said his parish's reaction over the unfolding events in Ukraine has been shock at best. He held the last-minute prayer service to show the Ukrainian community in Tucson stands in solidarity with Ukraine.

"There are Ukrainians all over the continent. They are praying in these days. They are gathering, holding vigils; they are demonstrating over various political structures to draw the attention of the world. Finally, the world is paying attention," Chirovsky said.

Chirovsky said his parish has about 60 Ukrainians and 20 others from other backgrounds, emphasizing that his church welcomes anyone praying for peace.

"Not everyone here is of Ukrainian ethnic extraction. There are some people who simply want to be in solidarity with those who are suffering in Ukraine," Chirovsky said.
