Aerial yoga studio in Easley combines yoga therapy with aerialist techniques

EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

There's traditional yoga, and then there's aerial yoga. A yoga instructor in Easley has redesigned her studio to accommodate 12 swings made of fabric, providing her class the tools necessary to practice the growing craze.

Interactive Yoga Therapy on Main Street in Easley opened last week, after owner Linda Patterson made some important renovations.

"It's taking the practice of yoga into the air," said Patterson. She has been instructing yoga for 10 years, but she says aerial yoga is a whole new animal.

"It's great for the spine, so if it's back injuries the decompression piece of it, it's very therapeutic," said Patterson.

Student Heather Marshall loves aerial yoga because it helps with her physical pain.

"I have osteoarthritis in my spine, and I've had six herniated disks," she said. "Some of the inversions in swing yoga help that spinal decompression even more."

"You're trying to balance a swing and yourself, and you fall and you get up and you do it again. So it's really, it's challenging because you're in the air," said Lorraine Matheny.

Though the classes many times are mostly women, Patterson said men are also welcome and can get the same physical benefits from aerial yoga.
