Greenville County deputies are asking anyone who may have witnessed what led up to a deadly shooting that left a man dead and sent a young mother to the hospital Saturday morning to contact authorities.
Deputies said they were called the parking lot outside Crocs on Pelham Road in reference to a disturbance with possible shots fired just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies said everyone involved had fled the scene by the time they arrived, but they were able to get information about a possible suspect vehicle.
Deputies said they found that vehicle in the roadway a short distance down Pelham Road between the Bi-Lo and Earth Fare shopping centers, and discovered two people in the car with gunshot wounds.
Deputies said the two people had been shot during a fight with an unknown suspect in the roadway.
Deputies said one of the victims died at the scene.
Coroner Parks Evans said Rodney Nesbitt, 29, of Moore was shot and killed by another individual while he was the passenger in a Chevy Tahoe.
Evans said Nesbitt was shot in the head and that the manner of death was a homicide.
Family members said Nesbitt was an Army veteran who served in Iraq. They said Nesbitt died on his birthday and that they had planned to have a birthday party for him Saturday afternoon.
"How can you survive in the Army and go to Iraq and come back to Spartanburg, SC, and have someone take your life? That's not right," said the victim's brother, Austin Poole.
Poole says his family doesn't know any details of what happened Saturday morning. Now they're just hoping someone will come forward with information to put a suspect behind bars.
"He served for you. He served for me and anybody else. If it wasn't for people like him, you wouldn't have the freedom you have," said Poole.
Ashley Hiott, a young mother of two, was also shot in the incident, according to her family.
Family members said in an e-mail that Hiott was also shot in the head, and they are thankful that she is still clinging to life in the hospital.
"We will not know the severity of the injuries until the swelling goes down," the e-mail said, "and she has two beautiful daughters that need her."
Pelham Road was closed between the Views at Pelham Apartments and the McDonalds as deputies investigated the shooting. Deputies reopened the road just before 9 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
