Kids from the children's ministries programs at Ware Shoals First Baptist Church laid out a mile's worth of pennies Saturday.
Nancy McClinton said the children had been learning about mission work and raising money to benefit missionaries around the world.
"The children raised over $900 for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, which helps fund mission trips worldwide," McClinton said. "I wanted to find a way for the children to celebrate their accomplishment, and found out that we had more than enough pennies to cover a mile from end-to-end."
McClinton said the children began laying down a single row of pennies along a Ware Shoals sidewalk at 10 a.m. Four hours later, she said the children finished laying down the 90,000 red cents.
"The kids were so excited, and they saw it through to the final coin," McClinton said. "I'm so proud of them."
After the pennies were laid out, McClinton said her husband arrived with a shop-vac and a generator and began recollecting the coins.
She said the children's next task would be to re-roll the pennies.
