Democrats seeing dollar signs in wake of SB 1062

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It's a bill that's divided Arizona. But behind the scenes there's a lot more going on than just talk.

It seems SB 1062 has prompted some people to speak their mind through their pocketbook.

If signed into law, the bill would protect a business owner from civil litigation for refusing service to a gay person based on that business owner's religious beliefs.

D.J. Quinlan is the executive director for the Arizona Democratic Party. He says the organization has received thousands in donations over the past several days.

"We see it every time there's a big issue. If you look at this vote, every single Democrat voted against 1062, and people recognized that," said Quinlan

We won't know for sure how much money has come in until next month when an official report has been submitted.

Meanwhile, donations for the GOP have remained about the same. Spokesman Tim Sifert declined to go on camera but sent us a statement that reads:

"The Arizona Republican Party is having a record-breaking fundraising season and we are continuing to have success going into the elections in November. In January we brought in more than double what the Democrats did, and those same Democrats have been in debt for over a year. The Arizona Republican Party today has over ten times more cash on hand than the Democrats."

The bill is expected to hit Gov. Jan Brewer's desk this week.
