2 NC women exposed to potent heroin inside package

Posted: Updated:

Authorities in Fayetteville say two women were taken from a home after opening a package one police spokesman said contained heroin laced with acetyl fentanyl (ah-SEE'-til FEN'-tah-nil).

Police Capt. Anthony Kelly told reporters that officers and firefighters responded to a call of a suspicious package around 3 p.m. They brought the unidentified women out of the house and took them to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where their conditions were unknown.

Kelly said investigators are trying to determine how the women ingested the heroin.

Kelly said two young children were in the home at the time of the incident.

More than 80 people have died in recent weeks from injecting heroin laced with acetyl fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opiate that resembles heroin but is considered more potent.
