More loud booms reported in Chesnee, Cowpens area

COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Witnesses said the sound is loud and annoying.

"It goes boom, boom!" Robbie Buhl, a witness to a loud boom that startled him, said. "It shook the walls."

A couple of weeks ago, deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office investigated several 911 calls reporting the mysterious booms.

"We got another idiot setting off one of those bombs again," one caller told a dispatcher.

"I don't know if a meth lab has blown up near me," another called said.

Amanda Clippard lives in Cowpens on the Spartanburg - Cherokee County line.

"It's really quiet. We don't usually have any issues at all," Clippard said. "We never did see anything, you know - you just hear it."

But early Saturday around 1 a.m., callers from the Chesnee and Cowpens area reported more loud booms. Investigators believe those loud booms could come from Tannerite, which is a combination of aluminum powder and ammonium nitrate.

The mixture can be found in containers and used as exploding targets. Those Tannerite targets are usually shot during firearm practice. However, some may be using several pounds of the mixture at one time, which causes the loud explosion.

Clippard said the booms are becoming a noisy nuisance.

"It can be disturbing, especially to  people with small children or elderly people," she said.

About two weeks ago, Spartanburg County deputies found a crater in the area people reported hearing booms. Investigators took material from that area to a lab to be examined.

"If someone is doing it, they'll probably get caught," Clippard said.

Investigators said Tannerite isn't illegal, but if it causes damage to someone's property the user could be held responsible for damages. Tannerite is available at sporting goods stores and gun shops.
