Through the generosity of alumni, Furman University announced its men's golf program will continue.

The Furman Board of Trustees had previously decided to discontinue the sport, but through the golf team's alumni, they will provide short-term funds to keep the program operational.

The donations will also establish an endowment for scholarships. With the funds, the university will be able to sustain the cost reductions behind the board's initial decision.

"We are all proud alums of the Furman golf program, and none of us wanted to see it discontinued," said Furman alum and professional golfer Brad Faxon '83. "So we talked with university officials, and discussed what we could do to bring the program back."

The board said they were happy to learn about the enthusiasm and support of the alumni's plan. They had decided to discontinue the program earlier in February after evaluating the public visibility, attendance, competitiveness and overall costs to keep the program and it would have ended July 1.

The Paladins golf team have are playing in a tournament against John Hayt Intercollegiate in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Tuesday.
