MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by officers after a chase that ended at a Mesa apartment complex Tuesday morning, Gilbert Police said.
The victim is identified as 57-year-old Harold Phelps.
Officers from the Gilbert and Mesa police departments and deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office were involved.
A Gilbert Police officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries suffered during the pursuit, according to a Gilbert Police Department Twitter feed.
The robbery happened at a Bank of America at 2170 S. Power Rd. south of Baseline Road in Gilbert at about 9:35 a.m.
Phelps fled the scene on the bicycle.
A short time later, officers got word of a carjacking in the Goodwill parking lot at 10603 E. Main St. in Mesa. Police located the suspect and the chase began.
Phelps intentionally rammed a Gilbert Police officer in his police vehicle near 100 South Cheshire St. in Mesa, investigators said.
The officer involved in the collision was taken to the hospital and later released.
After the collision, Phelps continued driving even though his vehicle was operating on three tires.
Phelps was shot at the Mountain View Apartments near Crismon and Broadway roads in Mesa. He had exited the vehicle and was attempting to flee on foot. Two Gilbert Police officers fired their service weapons after Phelps threatened them, investigators said.
Phelps was struck and officers immediately performed CPR. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was the 10th officer-involved shooting of 2014 in the Valley. Another shooting happened near the Valley in San Carlos on Jan. 13.
