GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville police are warning the community after an elderly woman was scammed out of more than $7,000 by a woman claiming to have found $150,000 in the Haywood Mall parking lot.

The elderly victim was approached in the Belk parking lot by a female asking if she dropped a cosmetic bag at 1 p.m. on Feb. 21, according to Lt. Johnathan Bragg.

The woman then convinced the victim to take her to her boss' office - who she claimed was an attorney - to figure out what do with the bag, Bragg said.

The victim took her to a shopping center on Congaree Road where the woman went inside and returned saying there was $150,000, according to Bragg.

Bragg said the female subject told the victim her boss would split the money three ways but it would cost them $7,690 in legal fees.

The elderly victim then withdrew the money after she dropped off the female at the Subway on Augusta Road.

When the victim was driving back she noticed she was being followed by a black four-door SUV with the female inside with another woman, Bragg said.

The woman then jumped into the car with the elderly victim and got the $7,690, saying she would be right back, according to Bragg.

The woman left and did not return, Bragg said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Greenville Police Department Tip Line at 864-271-GCPD (4273) or Greenville Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
