Woman can't get through to 911 during home invasion
ELLENWOOD, GA (CBS46) -
An Ellenwood homeowner called 911 three times during a home invasion and said she could not get an operator on the phone.
Danielle Bryan was at home alone on Tuesday night around 8 p.m. She said a Jeep drove around her house and a man was looking through her window.
Bryan called 911.
"I am panicking and I need to call 911, and that's what I did, and I couldn't get anyone," said Bryan.
She called three times. DeKalb County 911 Center logs confirm Bryan called three times.
"The last thing you're doing is thinking 'I am going to just wait on and someone will eventually pick up,'" said Bryan.
The logs also show Bryan waited nine seconds, 11 seconds, and one minute and 21 seconds before hanging up. Bryan never got through to a dispatcher.
"If you hang up you're going to the end of the queue. You are going to the back of the line," said Marshall Mooneyham, director of DeKalb County 911 Center.
Mooneyham said the wait time, if any, is usually 10 to 30 seconds.
"Any time you get that message, to me that's excessive, realistically in DeKalb County that can happen," said Mooneyham.
Bryan said at least three men tried to break in and broke in her front door. She ran and hid in her bedroom closet. Her alarm company called her and then immediately got 911 on the line, bringing officers to her home.
Officers said they found shell casings from a gun outside her home.
"That minute could have been my life and I could have been dead, all because you guys didn't pick up the phone," said Bryan.
Mooneyham said he would look into why Bryan was waiting for one minute and 21 seconds.
On Thursday, DeKalb County reported they had a 50 percent increase in calls during the hour Bryan called. The 911 center handles an average of 105 calls per hour and the hour during Bryan's calls the center handled 151 calls.
