Dougherty's Sloan signs with Point

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty Trojans may have had a winless season in 2013, but wide receiver Ricardo Sloan shone through.

Sloan signed a scholarship with Point University Wednesday.

"It was kind of tough," Sloan says of the Trojans' on-field results. "But [Dougherty head coach Corey] Joyner always instilled in us character, hard work, and determination, and to never give up. So that's just what I put everything to."

Sloan did a little bit of everything for Dougherty in 2013.

That's not bad for an athlete who always envisioned himself a basketball player.

"Coach Joyner told me to come try football," he remembers. "So I tried it, liked it, and it went from there."

He says he's excited to play against the next level of competition, but is also looking forward to making good on a promise he made to his mother Wednesday.

"In four years, I will be a physical therapist," he said.

Sloan says getting his college degree is the most important goal while at Point, and he says it's all because of his mother.

"It's very, very important because my mother worked so hard for me and my brother to get where we're at today," he says. "If it weren't for her, I don't know where I'd be."
