SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Simpsonville soldier surprised her family as she returned from Afghanistan a few days early, having been gone nearly a year.

Spc. Kayla Patterson stepped off the plane Wednesday and began finalizing plans to surprise her family at her younger brother's lacrosse game.

Her brother, Adam Clements, is on the Hillcrest High School lacrosse team, and little did he know she was standing on the sidelines, dressed as just another referee.

Some of Patterson's friends helped her get the surprise together along with help from the school.

The last her family heard, Patterson would not be home until Sunday, so the reveal over the loudspeakers was quite the shock.

"I was pretty bummed," Adam said. "I was coming out here, I was kind hanging my head because I was missing my sister a lot, and I saw her, and it made my day."

The surprise plan hatched in just a few hours went off without a hitch.

"It's so awesome," Adam said. "I was worried about her over there in Afghanistan, and it's such a blessing to have her back."
