The 37th annual Reedy River Run kicks off Friday in downtown Greenville.
The event draws in more 3,000 runners from across the state to compete for both bragging rights and prize money.
The weekend's festivities begin with the Children's Fun Run for youngster's ages 3 through 6 at 5:45 p.m. Then at 6 p.m. children ages 5 through 14 will compete in the Reedy Great Youth Mile Run.
Saturday marks the big event with a 10K starting at 8 a.m. In this race, elite runners compete in the 10k Championship, where the three fastest runners walk away with up to $1,250 in cash. Last year's fastest male competitor finished in 30 minutes and eight seconds, with a pace of 4.51-minute miles. The fastest female finished after just 33 minutes and two seconds.
The final race of the weekend is a 5K walk/run beginning at 8:50 a.m.
All races begin on Main Street in downtown Greenville and event organizers say drivers should expect some delays and road closures on both Friday evening and Saturday morning until 10:45 a.m.
It is free to line the road race course and cheer the runners on. For a look at the full event schedule and the course map, visit the event's website, www.reedyriverrun.com.
