CHEROKEE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Cherokee, NC, hotel closed for the season caught fire Thursday, damaging the office and all of the rooms.

The Cherokee Fire Department and neighboring agencies from Swain and Jackson counties were called to the Pageant Inn on Tsali Boulevard about 8:15 p.m. when smoke was spotted billowing from the rear of the motel.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a portion of the hotel, leaving only smoke and residual damage to the remaining rooms.

The fire also spread into the surrounding woods but was extinguished before it damaged nearby homes.

Firefighters and investigators were sifting through the rubble on Friday to determine the cause of the fire and if it was set intentionally. Authorities said the hotel did not have any patrons staying because it was closed for the season.

The Bryson City, Qualla and Cullowhee fire departments helped Cherokee crews battle the blaze.

Authorities said no one was injured.
