'Substantial' progress made in Briana Rabon murder

Posted: Updated:

Kershaw County Sheriff's investigators are reporting "substantial" progress in the ongoing investigation to discover who murdered a former Lugoff-Elgin High School student earlier this week.

According to authorities, progress is being made due in part to surveillance footage taken from at least two locations. Search warrants have also been issued.

Sheriff Jim Matthews indicates his department is getting closer to the person believed responsible for the murder of Briana Nicole Rabon.

Rabon, 18, was found dead in the middle of a road in Elgin around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said they found Rabon's car several miles away at a Waffle House on Highway 601 in Camden.

"We're making significant progress on this case," Matthews said. "We are narrowing things down. And I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. While I might not be tomorrow it's something we have to run down. Also this morning I contacted the FBI and asked for some assistance from them and they were ready willing and able to help us."

The coroner's office revealed Rabon's cause of death as strangulation.

There have been a couple of troubling developments in connection with the case. One involving an inaccurate report spread on social media that arrests have been made. Matthews says that is not true.

The other big problem surfacing was a photo of the crime scene including the victim's body that was taken before sheriff's investigators arrived. That picture, for reasons that remain unclear, was posted on the Internet sometime within the last 48 hours.

Matthews said his department has been trying to contact people who have circulated the photo and ask them to delete it. He said he knows who took the picture and has also expressed his unhappiness about the situation.

"That's a very disrespectful thing and it's very hurtful to the families so I would suggest if anybody has that, just delete and not spread it around anymore," Matthews said. "It also has the potential for hurting the prosecution. A defense attorney could say it was inflammatory to potential jury members."

In the meantime, Rabon's funeral will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Sawney's Creek Baptist Church in Ridgeway, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
