GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Pieces of an extinct wooly mammoth are now for sale at a Greenville antique store, according to the manager.

Diane Brewer, an ivory expert and manager of La Bella Antiques on Howell Road, said she conducted tests confirmed that three pieces of ivory she recently acquired from the Arctic Circle were pieces of a wooly mammoth tusk.

Brewer said carbon dating in Florida showed that the tusk pieces were more than 10,000 years old.

Brewer said she was able to confirm the tusk belonged to an Ice Age-era mammoth by measuring the angles of the marks and striations on the ivory.

"Depending on the degree at which the marks meet tells us whether whatever ivory we're examining is hippo teeth, or tusks from animals like elephants or saber tooth tigers," Brewer said. "The angles on these pieces are 115 degrees, which is the obtuse angle only found in wooly mammoth tusks."

Brewer said the tusk remnants will likely be sold to a museum, she invites area history and animal enthusiasts to come and see the ancient pieces of ivory while they are on display at La Bella.
