WILLIAMSTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Williamston City Councilman Rocky Burgess said he made a worthwhile find while cleaning out a house that he owns on Greenville Drive.

He said he found a stock ownership certificate hidden between two walls.

The certificate was issued to the home's previous owner, Mary Brown, by the First American Corporation for 100 shares of stock in the company back in 1960.

According to the company's website, First American Financial Corporation is a financial services company that provides title insurance and settlement services to the real estate and mortgage industries.

First American Financial most recently traded for nearly $27.00 on the New York Stock Exchange, meaning the value of the stock holding is at least $2,700.

"It may be worth a lot more depending on how many times the shares have been split among the shareholders over the last 50 years," Burgess said.

Burgess said he contacted his realtor after he found the certificate Friday and was able to reach out to the shareholder's granddaughter, who lives in New Mexico.

"I spoke to her on the phone Friday and told her what I had found," Burgess said.

Burgess said he plans to mail the certificate to the granddaughter on Monday.

"I'm not sure if the shares are still a part of Mrs. Brown's estate, but I want her family to have the certificate at least," Burgess said.
