Statewide tornado drill planned for Tuesday morning

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As part of severe weather preparedness week, a statewide tornado drill will be held Tuesday morning in South Carolina.

The National Weather Service will initiate the drill at 9 a.m. March 4 using EAS and NOAA weather radios. FOX Carolina will also participate with a message sent out over our broadcast channel.

Please note, the drill is only a test. The drill is a test to determine the readiness of EAS equipment and emergency radio receivers located in broadcast facilities, schools, hospitals and other public buildings.

If you have an EAS receiver or weather radio set to receive tornado codes, then you should receive the drill message at approximately 9 a.m. If your radio malfunctions or is not properly programmed, and you have not received the drill message by 9:15 a.m., you are encouraged to participate in the drill.

For North Carolina residents, the governor has decided that the state will hold their tornado drill Wednesday March 5 at 9:30 a.m. Schools and government buildings will participate in the drill in addition to test messages broadcast on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio and the Emergency Alert system.

The drills are a part of the National Weather Service's National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, which runs from March 2-8.

Throughout the week, people are reminded to understand the severe weather risks that may pose a threat to their region and prepare their homes and businesses in advance in the event a severe storm or disaster strikes.
