CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Clemson University police said while checking a dorm for occupants after a fire alarm went off, they encountered a combative student who shoved an officer while trying to avoid arrest.

Campus police were called to the Johnstone Hall dorm Friday night when they said a fire alarm was triggered when someone set off a fire extinguisher just after midnight.

The dorm was evacuated, so officers and firefighters checked the building to make sure everyone was out.

But police said they came to one room and when they tried to enter, someone slammed the door several times against an officer. Police said the student then grabbed the officer's uniform and shoved him.

University police said 19-year-old William Van Tuyl Hobbie IV, of Montclair, NJ, was arrested. He was charged with assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest, interfering with an officer, possession of liquor by a person under 21 years old and possession of beer by a person under 21 years old. Police said he was released on an $11,440 surety bond.
