TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson's City Council isexpected to vote today on a new ordinance that would ban puppy mill dogs frombeing sold in local pet stores.

Supporters of this newordinance say it will push pet store owners in Tucson to get their dogs from ashelter instead of a puppy mill.

The goal is to help easeovercrowding at area shelters.  Estimatesfor Tucson show that 7,000 dogs are euthanized each year in the city.

Any large scale commercialbreeding operation, where animals are kept in poor conditions could be classifiedas a puppy mill.  A rally in Tucson onMonday showed large scale support for this new ordinance, which is beingmodeled after Phoenix and San Diego puppy mill sale bans.  This new ordinance will affect anyoneconsidering buying a new puppy.

If approved today, Tucsonwill be one of only 40 cities in the U.S. to have this ordinance.
