DUNCAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

State investigators have been called in to investigate a fatal shooting of a woman who tried to drive off in a Duncan police officer's patrol car Tuesday morning, according to the police chief.

Chief K.R. Cothran said officers were called a disturbance along Frontage Road near Interstate 85 and Highway 290 in Duncan.

Cothran said a responding officer arrived at the scene and began to talk to 27-year-old John Rockwood, of Greenville, who took off running on foot, so the officer went back to his patrol car to try to chase after him but he found a woman in his car.

The woman put the patrol car in drive and fearing for his life, the officer "took action," according to Cothran.

Cothran said the officer shot the woman, killing her. He said the patrol car was in gear and moving when shots were fired. He said officers were able to locate the man and take him into custody.

Deputies and the State Law Enforcement Division agents along with the coroner were called in to assist with the investigation.

As is protocol with all officer-involved shootings, SLED will handle the investigation.

The Duncan Police Department has pending charges on Rockwood for two counts of car breaking, two counts of car jacking and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Cothran said Rockwood is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center for a failure to stop on command of an officer charge. Online jail records show he was also charged with two counts of carbreaking, two counts of carbreaking without great harm, receiving stolen goods and petit larceny, but information regarding those charges has not been released.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the woman as Rebecca Lynn Oliver, 24. He said her last known address was in Campobello.

Oliver's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest. The toxicology results are pending.

Rockwood was denied bond on Wednesday.
