Pelzer woman thrown from car in Piedmont dies from her injuries

PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

South Carolina Highway Patrol said they're investigating the cause of a fatal single-car crash on Old Pelzer Road in Piedmont on Tuesday evening. 

The incident happened at 6 p.m. near McMahan Mill Road.

Greenville County coroner Parks Evans said Hayley Gunter, 21, was killed in the accident.

Gunter, who was a passenger in the car, was thrown from the car when it flipped, according to Evans.

Investigators said the woman was not wearing a seatbelt.  Gunter was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the driver to lose control, cross the center lane and crash into a field. Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.

He said it was not a hit-and-run crash but was a single-car collision.

Bill Rhyne of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said they are asking a couple that may have witnessed the accident to call Highway Patrol.

Rhyne said the wintesses were in a bright red Chevy Silverado pickup.

Rhyne stressed that the couple is not in any trouble but may have vital information on what happened.
