Deputies: Meth lab discovery sends 2 Oconee Co. officers to hospital

FAIR PLAY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Oconee Co. deputies got an unpleasant surprise when they went to serve an eviction notice at a trailer off Highway 59 in Fair Play.

"Their skin started burning, headache, that sort of thing, so they immediately backed out," said Chief Deputy Kevin Davis.

Davis said no one was home, and when they left the house deputies noticed containers like ones that might be used in meth production. The officers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Narcotics Division then arrived to assess the scene. The owner of the trailer lives next door and said his son lives there and has been arrested and served prison time for meth production in the past, though he has not been officially named as a suspect by deputies.

The father of that man declined an interview with FOX Carolina.

But neighbors said they are fed up with the drug problem in Oconee Co.

"It's an epidemic, it's everywhere," said Alice Brown, who lives near where the bust occurred.

"We'd like to have a clean neighborhood," she said. "I'd like to see people talk about it, I think that it is something that is not talked about," Brown said of the problem.

"Last year alone we had 22 meth labs in Oconee Co.," said Davis.

He added since last year the sheriff's office has made it a priority to find and take down meth labs.

No suspect has been officially named in this case. If you have any information, call CRIMESTOPPERS at 23-CRIME.
