WESTMINSTER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office said a Westminster man turned himself in after a moonshine still was seized just outside Walhalla on Wednesday.

Spokesperson for the sheriff's office, Jimmy Watt, said narcotics agents received information about the still, which was in plain view, from an officer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR officer told deputies a large portion of the moonshine still was outside of a storage building with mason jars filled with a clear liquid and a 55-gallon drum, according to Watt.

Watt said deputies also discovered more mason jars full of moonshine and ingredients used for making it on a different part of the property.

According to deputies, when they first arrived at the property, the suspect's father gave permission to search. Then the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Colby Watts, showed up and admitted to making the moonshine, deputies said.

Deputies said Watts told them he had made moonshine for two years to drink but he had been told it was not illegal to make. When deputies told him that it was illegal and asked if he had any other stills, they said Watts showed them more gallons kept in the garage.

Deputies valued the moonshine seized at around $1,000.

Watts, 21, turned himself into deputies Friday morning and was charged with possession of a distillery for the purpose of manufacturing alcoholic liquors and possession of materials used in the manufacture of alcoholic liquors, according to Watt.
