AZ line dance teacher recognized for her comic relief
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A Valley woman teaches line dancing classes that often turn into stand up comedy routines and her students love her for it.
Pat Newell can do just about every line dance in her sleep. She's been teaching them for 31 years, most recently at the Peoria Community Center.
"You cannot not enjoy it. I told Pat she missed her calling as a stand-up comic. She's not only the most loving person you could ever hope to meet, the most caring person, but she is absolutely hilarious. Her brain works differently than the rest of the universe," said Nancy Caler.
The group Caler is part of is called "A Class Act" and they get together to make their outfits.
Newell's positive attitude hasn't gone untested. She is a cancer survivor and 15 years ago while on a cruise with her husband, they learned that their daughter, Gena was shot and killed in a road rage incident.
That tragedy alone could derail any parent but Newell makes a conscious decision each morning to keep dancing and encourages others to do the same.
Members of "A Class Act" nominated Newell for CBS 5's Pay It Forward for Newell's tireless efforts and infectious spirit.
The group presented her with $500 this week.
"You are a blessing to all who know you, and you will have to wait until you get to heaven to know the total number of people that you have impacted," Caler said.
"I'm overwhelmed by it. That is totally overwhelming. This class is so good to me," Newell said.
"I call it Vitamin F: family, friends and fun. If you can get your vitamin infusion every day, have a joyous moment every day, do something nice for someone every day, you go to bed a happy person, you really do," Newell said.
