Riverside track coach and geometry teacher Kelly Ackerman spent three days living the life of a Marine recruit on Parris Island. Ackerman was one of several teachers from the Southeast to take part in the Educator's Workshop put on by the Marine Corps.

The Corps says the workshop is aimed at helping teacher's help their students make better career choices and to give them an inside look at what basic training is like.

Ackerman says she signed up for the class so she could better guide her students.

"Not every kid is going to go to college," Ackerman said. "I need to be able to tell my students what it will take to become a Marine."

During their stay on the Recruit Depot the teachers learned the basics of marching and marksmanship. They also saw the various training phases that recruits go through including combat swimming and the confidence course.

The teachers also got plenty of one-on-one time with their drill instructors.

"It scares you when someone screams at you," said Ackerman. "You think 'I better figure it out fast.'"

The teachers also got opportunities to talk with recruits going through the training about their experience.

Captain Alex Pearson says the goal was to give the teacher's total access to the base.

"We don't have any secrets out here," Pearson said. "We want them to see what their students would go through at boot camp."

Pearson said the goal was not to make the teachers into recruiters but to arm them with the knowledge that could help them answer questions that students interested in a military career may have.

Ackerman said among the many things she learned during her time on the depot was a deeper respect for those who've earned the title of United States Marine.

"It makes a man out of somebody, a woman out of somebody," Ackerman said. "They helped me look beyond what I am supposed to teach but what I am supposed to make out of the students in my classroom."
