Downtown Greenville curfew is in effect

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville Police want to remind people about a weekend curfew for anyone under the age of 18 in downtown Greenville.

Police said the curfew starts at 10 p.m. and goes until 6 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. Kids under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian if they do go downtown. With spring around the corner and events like Saint Patrick's Day, police are concerned teens will hang out in areas like Falls Parks.

"We want to get the message out to parents and to the kids that Greenville has a curfew, and that the curfew is in effect on Friday and Saturday nights," said Lt. Jason Rampey with the Greenville Police Department.

Rampey said they are adding additional officers downtown to make sure there are no issues. Officers want people to enjoy the warmer weather and get outside. He said they're going to make sure people understand what the curfew is before they arrest anyone.

"We'll give you the opportunity to leave. We're going to educate to what the curfew is. If you're seen in that area again you're going to be detained and taken to city hall," said Rampey.

Once at City Hall, parents will be called to come get their children but they will still have to head to court. Rampey said you could be fined for breaking the curfew.
