Deputies in Spartanburg County said a man faces multiple charges after he broke windows out of three apartments, stole a flashlight from one unit, and damaged property inside another.

Deputies said they were called to apartments on Springfield Road around 2 a.m. Saturday after receiving a call from a resident that a strange man had broken all the windows in his home.

Deputies said they arrived to find two apartments with all windows broken out and a third unit with two broken windows.

Deputies said Lester Hatfield walked out of one of the damaged apartments with his hands up and told deputies that he did not live there.

Deputies said Hatfield was highly intoxicated and admitted that he didn't know where he was or how he got there. He reportedly told deputies that he had stolen a flashlight from one of the vandalized apartments and used it to smash out the windows.

When asked why he busted the windows, deputies said Hatfield said he was trying to get the attention of someone inside. Then deputies said Hatfield told them he didn't know anyone who lived at the apartments he vandalized.

Hatfield also told deputies he didn't remember how he got into the apartment he had stolen the flashlight from, but a witness said Hatfield had kicked the front door open, according to reports.

Deputies said a background check showed Hatfield had an active warrant out for his arrest out of the city of Spartanburg, and was transported to the detention center, where he was kept in a holding cell until he was able to sober up.

Hatfield was then booked on one count of burglary first degree, one charge of petit larceny, and three counts of malicious injury to personal property.
