GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A new housing development in Greenville County is causing a lot of friction with neighbors.

Residents along Boiling Springs Road feel the county may have a traffic nightmare on the horizon, if the developer's rezoning request is approved.

Rosewood Communities, the developer, plans to create a new subdivision near the Phillips Road and Boiling Springs Road intersection. The developer is asking for approval to build 54 homes on land that currently only has two homes.

There is a petition that has more than 700 signatures asking the rezoning request be denied. The spokesmen for the group said he also has several signatures on paper petitions that he's handed over to the county council.

Their major concerns are increased traffic problems on an already-congested road, and more flooding issues.

"I personally have witnessed a fatal accident waiting to pull out of Philips Road onto Boiling Springs," said concerned citizen Rick Janczak. "You already take your life in your hands to pull out from the stop sign."

FOX Carolina reached out to Rosewood Communities, but the call was not immediately returned.

Under the current zoning permit, Rosewood Communities will be allowed to build 45 homes, but concerned citizens say they'll keep fighting to prevent them from building 54. They say allowing even more homes by rezoning sets a bad precedent for the area.

There will be several meetings about the rezoning request this week. The first is Monday at 4:15 p.m. at Greenville County Square.

An additional meeting will take place Tuesday, when the petitioners are meeting with elected officials at the Sugarcreek clubhouse at 7 p.m.
