Greenville Co. Schools one step closer to forgiving snow days

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County School Board has approved the first vote on forgiving up to five missed days in the wake of this year's winter weather.

The board met Tuesday where they said they would forgive several of the six missed days in the wake of a new bill that has moved through the South Carolina legislature.

The bill will allow individual districts to forgive up to five days beyond the three required makeup days. The House and Senate approved the bill and it is now waiting for Gov. Nikki Haley's signature.

Greenville County has already made up two of three required days and plans to makeup the third on June 6 - the last day of the school year.

The school board will meet again on Tuesday, March 25 to give the final approval.

A district spokesperson said the recommendation to forgive up to five days was based on the reasoning that potential makeup days in June or on Saturdays would be disruptive to families, would likely not be well attended and would not have the desired instructional value.
