GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Three Upstate residents have been indicted on possession and distribution of child pornography charges, the solicitors office announced on Tuesday.

U.S. States Attorney General Bill Nettles said a federal grand jury in Greenville returned indictments against Robert Bullard, Walter Alexander and James Newton.

Bullard, 59, of Spartanburg, was charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

Alexander, 30, of Travelers Rest, was charged with possession of child pornography and receipt of child pornography.

Newton, 54, of Easley, was charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

The penalty for the possession charge is 20 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $250,000, according to Nettles.

The possible jail time for the distribution and receipt charges is not less than five years and not more than 20 years imprisonment, and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The indictments come as part of Project Safe Childhood, a government program to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.

A man saying he is Bullard contacted FOX Carolina News and said the indictment comes from sharing files on a peer-to-peer network. Bullard said he is a "computer geek" and was sharing media though a site based in France.

He said the files in question were in a larger folder with thousands of other files, such as music movies and pornography.

Bullard said several of his computers and hard drives were seized by Homeland Security in December of 2012. He said many have been returned to him but his desktop and several external hard drives have not.
