FOUNTAIN INN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

During a meeting Thursday night, Fountain Inn City Council members voted unanimously to pass the first reading of a proposal to ban texting and driving within the city.

Fountain Inn Mayor Gary Long said the first reading passed with a 5-0 vote, and a final reading will take place during the next council meeting on April 10.

The discussion comes as multiple cities in Greenville County have been toying with the idea of imposing penalties on distracted drivers. Greenville City Council passed their ban last month, and it will go into effect April 1.

Long said the issue is something that has been on the horizon for some time and believes it will save innocent lives.

Now that the first reading has passed, Long said city leaders will discuss how to enforce the ban with the police and fire chief.
