BLACKSBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Cherokee County deputies on the lookout for suspicious or drug-related activity found five kilos of cocaine hidden inside a tractor trailer at a truck stop on Tuesday.

Deputies said they were out on interdiction operations along Interstate 85 and while at the Love's Travel Plaza on Priester Road in Blacksburg, they noticed a suspicious truck.

Then one of their canine's alerted to illegal drugs but officers were unable to find the driver or owner of the truck, deputies said. They said the semi truck had been parked in the lot for several days.

Inside a hidden compartment under the trailer's refrigeration unit, deputies said they discovered six bundles wrapped in metallic tape that field tested positive for 5 kilos of cocaine. Deputies seized the truck and drugs.

The trailer is valued at $100,000 and the cocaine has a street value of $160,000 and if broken down into smaller quantities, it would have a potential street value of $500,000 deputies said.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said they are working with the Department of Homeland Security to locate the trucking company owner and determine who was driving the truck. He said whoever was driving it left it for several days, which is common practice. He said the truck did not have a load inside the trailer.

While they would have liked to find the driver with the truck, Mueller said they are thankful the drugs will not make it on the streets.
