The assistant superintendent of Spartanburg County School District 4 was arrested in Greenville, accused of public drunkenness, according to district officials.

Dr. Rallie Liston, district superintendent, said Dr. Glen Carson, 56, is on leave from the district, pending the outcome of the investigation following his arrest on Friday.

According to Greenville police, a homeowner called about 10 p.m. to report a suspicious person after he thought he saw a shadow in his backyard and heard car alarms go off in the neighborhood.

As officers were responding, police said they encountered a man dressed in sunglasses, jeans and a dark blue coat stumbling out of an alley along Aberdeen Drive off Augusta Street, nearly falling face first off the sidewalk and into the path of the patrol car.

The officer slammed on his brakes to stop, observing the man turn away and stand, swaying heavily, police said. According to the police report, the man, who was later identified as Carson, tried to cross the street, but the officer stopped him.

The report said Carson was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and he smelt of alcohol. Carson told the officer he had been drinking at Liberty Taproom downtown, police said.

Carson was unable to tell him where he lived and had trouble answering questions, according to the report. He said he did not realize it was a crime to be drunk and walk rather than driving, and was unaware he was "a danger to himself and others," the report stated.

He was arrested and charged with public intoxication and later released on bond.

Liston said Carson is on leave from the district, pending the outcome of the investigation. He said Carson has been with the district on and off for 20 years, including as a teacher, instructional coach and assistant superintendent, and has had no prior incidents or problems.
