(Toledo News Now) -

Has your cell phone been ringing lately from callers who you don't know? If you notice a missed call on your cell phone, don't jump to the conclusion of calling the mystery number back.

In January, people across the country started receiving hang up calls on their cell phones, and now they are becoming even more dangerous and deceitful.

It's the phone scam being heard around the world and it is affecting thousands of people.

"Really, I don't answer them, so I don't know what they are," said Kim Mitchell, who was hit by the phone scam.

Mitchell is among many people getting frustrated by the unknown calls.

"I did the Do Not Call list and that only lasts so long, and apparently it's over," said Mitchell.

To much surprise, the Better Business Bureau says the Do Not Call list will not stop these latest calls.

It is called the "one ring scam." Your phone will ring once or twice then stop. You will see a number with an unknown area code has called.

The BBB says scammers in Antigua, Barbados, and other islands are trying to lure you to return their call. If so, a charge of as much as $19 can show up on your monthly bill, according to the BBB.

FCC regulations don't apply, so they can authorize your bill for all sorts of premium calling and texting fees.

The bottom line is the BBB says do not return the call if you don't know who is calling and do not answer your cell phone if you see a call coming in from an area code you don't recognize. If it's really important, such as a distant relative, they will leave you a voice mail message.
