GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The National Weather Service asked the Greenville Spartanburg International Airport Fire Department to come up with a standardized plan to rescue personnel who may become trapped in the radar tower dome.

On Thursday, GSP firefighters put that rescue plan into action in a series of training exercises.

Specialized equipment and specially trained fire crew members participated in the drill scenario, officials said.

NWS officials said equipment that was once located on the ground level has been moved into the dome, and requires service personnel to climb up to the dome more frequently.

During the exercise, firefighters used specialized equipment to test various rescue options, and will use the results to create a standard operation guideline that will be used at all 120 National Weather Service Doppler Radar locations across the eastern seaboard, officials said.
