ENOREE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office and SLED said investigators neutralized an explosive device found while deputies were serving a warrant and also discovered a meth lab on the property.

Sheriff Ricky Chastain said deputies with the warrants division were out serving warrants on a man wanted for attempted murder when they discovered the device at the home on Community Center Road.

Chastain said the suspect, Thomas Whitehead Jr., resisted arrest, and said deputies tasered Whitehead after he tried to fight the deputies.

Deputies later found a device which appeared to be a homemade bomb made from a propane tank, a gas can, and other elements, Chastain said.

SLED's bomb squad was called in from Columbia and were able to neutralize the bomb, Chastain said.

Chastain said everyone living within a half-mile radius of Whitehead's home was evacuated as a precaution while bomb crews worked to disarm the explosive.

As the investigation continued, Chastain said a meth lab was discovered inside the home.
