A former teacher and coach at Shannon Forest Christian School is accused of exposing himself and inappropriately touching a 12-year-old student while employed with the school, according to deputies.

Greenville County deputies said a report was filed in February and as they investigated and spoke with the victim, they said they learned the incidents happened between August 2010 and June 2011.

Deputies said Christopher Kay, 32, exposed and gratified himself in front of the then 12-year-old boy on multiple occasions. According to deputies, Kay also inappropriately touched the child on one occasion.

At the time, deputies said Kay was a teacher and baseball coach at the school.

Shannon Forest released a statement Friday saying they were recently informed of the investigation into the allegations against Kay toward a former student while both were at the school.

They said Kay was fired in June 2011 for performance reasons and they were not aware of any accusation during his time at the school relating to inappropriate behavior or interactions with students.

The school also said, "SFCS does not condone, support or tolerate inappropriate behavior by any administration, faculty or staff member. Per the SFCS Employee Manual, employees must agree that their 'lifestyle and behavior, both on and off campus, should reflect the highest Biblical standards of morality, self-discipline and Christian commitment.' All employees are held to this standard."

Kay was arrested Friday and charged with lewd act on a minor and indecent exposure.

According to Spartanburg Day School, Kay became a full-time baseball coach and PE teacher for the 2013-2014 school year and is on leave in the wake of the investigation. The school said Kay was employed as a coach part-time last year.

SDS released the following statement regarding the investigation and Kay's arrest:

"Spartanburg Day School was recently advised by law enforcement authorities that an employee, Stuart Kay, has been accused of misconduct prior to his employment at SDS. Upon law enforcement's notification to the school, Kay was immediately placed on a leave of absence from all duties with SDS and will remain on leave until the official investigation into this matter is complete."

According to his bio on the SDS's website, Kay played baseball at Newberry College before working as a coach and/or teacher in the Upstate. Greenville County Schools spokesperson Oby Lyles said Kay worked for their district for three years as a classroom assistant at the Washington Center from fall 2004-2007, was a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Eastside High nearly 10 years ago and was a substitute teacher for the 2012-13 school year.

Deputies are asking anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
