SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy returned to the court room in Spartanburg County Friday.

Gowdy, the former solicitor for South Carolina's Seventh Judicial Circuit, was asked to attend Friday's hearings in the sentencing phase of Ricky Blackwell's trial.

After only 20 minutes of deliberation on Wednesday, a jury found Blackwell guilty of murdering an 8-year-old girl in 2009.

An official close to the case said the solicitor's office asked the sophomore representative from South Carolina's 4th Congressional District to return from Washington, DC to serve as a special prosecutor.

The official said Gowdy was on hand to cross examine the defense's experts if called upon, but was only an observer during Friday's proceedings.
