SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg County deputies said they charged a man with felony larceny after he was spotted stealing metal from a parked train.

Deputies said they saw John Petty, 49, jumping out of an Omni Source train car Saturday morning at the railroad tracks between Greenwood and Tryon Streets.

Deputies said several other pieces of metal were scattered on the ground where Petty landed.

Deputies said Petty ran off in the woods when he saw them approach and a foot chase ensued.

Other deputies responding to the foot chase intercepted Petty on Austin Street, where Petty was taken into custody, according to arrest reports.

Deputies said Petty was charged with larceny enhanced/felony.

Petty was later released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center on bond.
