GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A gas leak led to a fire inside a popular downtown Greenville restaurant Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

Greenville City Fire Battalion Chief Rick Mullinax said firefighters were called about 9:20 a.m. when employees at the Wild Wing Cafe reported the gas leak and fire.

The restaurant is located at 15 West Washington St. off of Main Street and is located in a building next to other restaurants, including Barley's Taproom.

A FOX Carolina iWitness sent in a photo from a nearby building that show flames and smoke from atop the building.

Mullinax said employees were getting ready for the day in the kitchen area when they noticed the gas leak, which turned to flames. He said the gas company had to come in and turn off the gas before firefighters could battle the flames that spread to the roof and HVAC system.

According to Mullinax, the fire did not last long because the building's sprinkler system activated, but the damage is unknown yet. The fire was contained to the restaurant, though adjoining businesses may smell like smoke, Mullinax said.

More than 20 firefighters were at the scene using ladder trucks to attack the fire atop the building, which was out within eight minutes, according to the chief.

He said there was not a danger of an explosion because the building's gas line was vented.

It is not yet known how long the restaurant will remain closed as crews investigate the fire then assess the damage caused by the smoke, fire and water from the sprinkler system.

A spokesperson for the restaurant said they are working with local management to determine how long the restaurant will be closed once they know the extent of the damage. He said they were thankful no one was injured and no customers were inside at the time.

Barley's, Luna Rosa and Trappe Door were also temporarily closed because of the fire.

Washington Street remains closed at the scene between Main and Richardson streets, as is South Laurens Street.

Firefighters said everyone inside was able to get OK and there were no injuries.

Wild Wing Cafe released the following statement on Wednesday which said in part:

We are currently investigating, with local authorities, a fire that occurred at the Greenville location. We are happy to confirm no one was hurt or injured. We will be thorough in our investigation to ensure all employees and guests remain safe, just as they have come to expect.

The safety of our customers and employees is of the utmost importance for us. The restaurant will remain closed today and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
