GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville County deputies said the search for a man who escaped a bail bondsman in downtown Greenville on Thursday was arrested Friday morning.

Greenville police said a tip led them to the discovery of the man, still handcuffed, near Hillside Drive at Laurens Road just before noon. They said canine officer Gio was the one who caught the suspect.

Deputies said 43-year-old Darrell Scott Ellason escaped the bail bondsmen near the law enforcement center about noon Thursday.

The sheriff's office immediately started searching the area with helicopters and officers on the ground, prompting several school lockdowns.

Master Deputy Jonathan Smith said Ellason has five active bench warrants for failure to appear and one active malicious damage warrant.

Smith said Ellason was last seen wearing a brown shirt and khaki shorts with no shoes.

Just after 4 p.m. they had no active search in any specific area going on, but patrol cars continued to look everywhere, according to Smith.

Summit Drive Elementary, League Middle Academy, East North Street Academy and Greenville Middle Academy were placed on lockdown during the search, but it was lifted for all schools by 3 p.m., a Greenville County Schools spokesperson said.

FOX Carolina's crew on Center Street, which is near East North Street and U.S. 276, said neighbors reported seeing the handcuffed man run by, barefoot.

The search was scaled back on Thursday night, but deputies continued to look for Ellason.

Witnesses told FOX Carolina they saw police take Ellason into custody in a wooded area off of Woodlark Street, which runs off of Hillside Drive.

Ellason is also charged with violation of probation, according to online jail records.

Ellason saw a judge on Saturday morning. He was giving a $5,000 bond for malicious injury charge, no bond on 4 bench warrants and no bond for violation of probation.
