GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A South Carolina man was sentenced to over four decades in prison on Thursday for the 2010 murder of his former girlfriend in Cherokee County.

Joey Lynn Clark, 43, was found guilty of murder after a three-day trial and two hours of deliberation by the jury.

Judge Howard King then sentenced him to 45 years for severely beating and stabbing 26-year-old Winter Wingaurd on Dec. 2, 2010.

Investigators said Wingaurd was trying to get out of an abusive relationship with Clark when she was killed.

Wingaurd's body was found by a passer-by along the shoulder of Mike's Creek Road in the northern part of the county.

Clark had prior convictions for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, failure to stop for blue lights and third-degree burglary.

The solicitor Barry Barnette said Clark will not be eligible for parole and will have to serve the complete 45-year sentence.
