ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The Anderson City Fire Department responded to a fire at the Fairview Gardens Apartments Thursday night that displaced several residents.
Firefighters say their initial investigation led them to believe the fire broke out in the kitchen of one of the units at the complex on Williamston Road in Anderson. According to the resident, she and her two children were cooking when the fire broke out. She said she attempted to put it out herself with an extinguisher, but said it spread too quickly. So she got her family out to safety and began alerting neighbors.
Neighbors pulled together knocking on doors to make sure everyone got out OK.
"I was awakened to someone beating on my door," said resident Francine Wilson. "I have smoke alarms but they didn't go off. I just thank God that I made it out you know unharmed."
There were no injuries, but four families lost their homes. Firefighters said the unit where the fire originated and the unit to its left were destroyed, while two others suffered extensive water and smoke damage.
Anderson City Battalion Chief Michael Guest said the outcome could have been worse based off how involved the fire was when crews arrived.
He said some of the damage to the apartments includes several inches of standing water. He also said the fire was able to break through into the attic area.
The Red Cross of Anderson has stepped in assist the victims.
