ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The western North Carolina boy who said he was tormented at school because of his "My Little Pony" backpack can bring the bag back to school.

Nine-year-old Grayson Bruce said he was bullied by his peers at Candler Elementary because of this backpack.

When he reported the taunting, Grayson's mom said the school told him to leave the backpack at home, which made her mad because she said that meant they were favoring the bullies.

Grayson's mom, Noreen Bruce, said she is glad the school is working with them and appreciates everyone's support. She said they are also working to ensure every child feels safe and comfortable at school.

The Buncombe County School District released a statement Thursday in response saying:

"We have appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Bruce family and discuss the issues. We sincerely regret that the issue of being told to leave the book bag at home was perceived as blaming Grayson. While that was not the intent, the perception became reality. We support Grayson bringing the book bag to school.

"We discussed a number of options to consider in moving forward for Grayson. All of the options discussed included a safety transition plan and an allowance for Grayson to bring the book bag to school.

"Every situation with young children is a teachable moment and we will use this example in our efforts to address a wider issue of bullying. The Bruce family has committed to working with us to improve and enhance our anti-bullying programs.

"We ask for everyone's patience and understanding as we continue to work collaboratively with the family toward a resolution that is best for Grayson and his classmates at Candler Elementary School."

Last week Grayson told FOX Carolina he got the backpack featuring one of his favorite characters because he is a fan of the animated show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

"I thought it was a blue backpack," he said. "I didn't think it was going to get the reaction that it did."

Word of Grayson's story quickly spread and now his Facebook page Support for Grayson has nearly 70,000 likes as of Friday March 21.
