A Manchester father of four was arrested early Friday morning after Vernon police said he poured a bottle of liquor on the mother of his children, and then trying to set her on fire.

Officers were called to an apartment on Terrace Drive around 3:30 a.m. after someone reported a disturbance. When they arrived, they found the woman inside the apartment soaked in Amaretto liquor.

Police said Ramon Gomez, 32, poured the liquor on the victim and then attempted several times to light it with a disposable lighter during a physical altercation, but was unable to do so.

"I believe that my children and I were in danger. He tried to light me on fire several times, but was not successful," the victim told police, according to arrest papers.

The victim was able to escape along with four young children who were also in the apartment.

Police said two of the children, who were Gomez's daughters and under the age of five, witnessed the whole incident and were even splashed with some of the alcohol.

Gomez's girlfriend told police the incident occurred after she confronted him about allegations of cheating.

Gomez was located by Manchester police a short time later and brought back to the Vernon Police Department. He is charged with risk of injury, reckless endangerment and criminal attempted assault.

The victim's nephew, Juan Vazquez, spoke to Eyewitness News and defended his uncle.

"He knows it's not flammable, and knows it's not gunna go up in flames," said Vazquez and went on to say "they fight. They're a couple. It happens."

The suspect denied everything. Gomez told police he poured the liquor onto the ground because his girlfriend drinks too much. Police said they didn't find any evidence that she was intoxicated.

Gomez, who court officials said is on probation, was no stranger to the law and has had domestic violence issues in 2003, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

"Ramon couldn't have," Vazquez said. "He doesn't have a bad bone in his body. (He's) a good man, a good worker, a good dad."

Gomez was arraigned in Rockville Superior Court on Friday. Following his court appearance, he is being held on a $100,000 bond.
