WELLFORD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Drivers headed south on Interstate 85 may have come to a stop in Spartanburg County Friday morning after troopers reported a vehicle fire near mile marker 66.

Spartanburg County Fire Marshal Bill Hall said the truck was headed south when it lost its left front tire, causing the rim to create heat and sparks about 9:30 a.m.

The driver was able to pull over and get out as the cab and engine caught fire, Hall said. He said road crews happened to pass by at just the right time and tried to put out the fire with extinguishers, but the flames grew too quickly.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but some oil from the tank leaked into a ditch, Hall said.

Crews are expected to be out at the site cleaning it up for a few hours.

The SCDOT reported the right lane was closed at the scene as of 11:20 a.m. and FOX Carolina's crew said the middle lane was closed as of 10:50 a.m.
